After 32 incredible years of design leadership, Mosaic Outdoor Living is proud to honor the retirement of David Schwank, one of our longest-serving owners and most respected outdoor living designers. David and his wife, Jill, are heading into a well-deserved retirement and relocating to Florida after decades of building not just decks and patios, but strong relationships across Colorado.
David played a vital role in shaping Mosaic Outdoor Living’s legacy and reputation as a leader in custom outdoor living spaces. When he joined the company, Mosaic had just six employees. Today, the team has grown to over 35 professionals who specialize in high-end outdoor design, including custom patios, luxury decks, outdoor kitchens, and more.
David’s fingerprints are on some of the most memorable projects in Mosaic’s history — from early “mega deck” builds that helped redefine the company’s scope to community-focused collaborations that reflected his heart for people.
At a recent celebration held in his honor, coworkers and friends shared heartfelt stories about David’s personal and professional impact. Co-owner Klint Reiber reflected on meeting David as a teen in youth group. “He always asked, How have you loved well, and how have you been loved? That question changed how I see people,” Klint shared.
Years later, David gave Klint his first job in outdoor construction — and eventually became a mentor and friend he trusted for life advice, even bringing his future wife to meet David for his blessing. “He’s been there for every chapter,” Klint said.
Those stories were common across the room. One team member remembered David teaching his kids to fish with a Barbie pole. Another remembered him giving advice during tough life moments — and always showing up with encouragement and wisdom.
Even clients saw the difference. David brought a deeply personal, hands-on approach to every design project. Whether it was a custom deck in Denver, a patio remodel in Colorado Springs, or a complete outdoor transformation in Boulder, David’s vision was always about building beautiful spaces that brought people together.
“The first time David comes into your home, he connects with you on a personal level,” one client said. “He understands you and you don’t get that in a lot of places.”
Dave's Faves
Below are a few of David’s most memorable outdoor living designs.
In David’s own words:
“This company has never been in a better place than it is now. You’re a well-oiled, well-tuned machine. And I’m excited to see what you all build next.”
As David and Jill head to Florida — with an open invitation to their Montana cabin in the summer — his legacy lives on in every structure, every team member, and every client he touched.
From all of us at Mosaic Outdoor Living, we say:
Thank you, David. For your designs. For your mentorship. And for a career filled with purpose and heart.
