One of the biggest design challenges wasn’t building the deck—it was preserving a 30-year-old shade tree the homeowners refused to lose. Rather than designing around its removal, Mosaic Outdoor Living engineered a custom covered deck and outdoor living space that protected the tree’s root system while making it the centerpiece of the design. Today, its canopy stretches over a dramatic 5-by-8-foot skylight, creating a one-of-a-kind treehouse atmosphere.
Transforming the Way the Family Lives Outdoors
Before the renovation, two separate decks, multiple stairways, and constantly wet patio furniture kept the family from enjoying their backyard.
“Now that we’ve done the covered deck, we’re out here all the time. It’s an extension of our home,” the homeowner said.
The new 1,300-square-foot outdoor entertainment space features maintenance-free composite decking, custom powder-coated railings, a Fire Magic outdoor kitchen, Rocky Mountain Fire Rail, motorized shades, infrared heaters, ceiling fans, and a private hot tub retreat.
Built for Entertaining in Every Season
The redesign completely changed how the homeowners entertain family and friends.
“It’s taken Thanksgiving from a meal where everybody eats and runs to a meal where everybody stays,” the homeowner said, describing evenings spent around the fire with family long after dinner ends.
The covered roof, heaters, motorized shades, and fire feature allow the family to comfortably enjoy Colorado’s changing seasons while still taking in panoramic mountain views.
A Backyard That Feels Like Home
For Andy, successful outdoor living design is about more than building a beautiful deck.
“We want every outdoor living space to look like it’s always been here,” he said.
Nearly two years later, the homeowners say that’s exactly what Mosaic delivered—a seamless extension of their home where they gather more often, entertain more easily, and enjoy Colorado sunsets beneath the shade of the tree they refused to lose.
